Let me start off by saying that the new 718 Cayman S has some serious performance potential. As you may or may not know that the 718 Cayman S comes with 2.5 Liter Flat four that is turbo charged pumping out 350hp and weighing in just under 3,000lbs. Now close your eyes for a minute and take away the fact that this is a flat four. I want you to focus on the power to weight ratio, and the smaller wheel base of this vehicle. Does it remind you of someone? Let me help you out, you need to be thinking late 90’s 911. Granted there are a lot of differences however, power to weight? Actually the Cayman has it beat in the 993 flat six Carrera S only packing 282hp weighing in at 3064 lbs. SO the Cayman is lighter and more powerful. Ok, not a fair comparison you say? Cayman will never be a 911? I agree. Let’s compare it to a car a lot of the population likes to hate the 996 911. Even in its most powerful flat six form came with 320hp and weighed 3240lbs. So the Cayman wins again. You have to get into the 997 Carrera S to match horsepower numbers with this 718. Now, I know many of you are saying right now, not a fair comparison on any of those fronts I mention due to the Cayman being forced induction. Let me defend myself, I picked on the flat sixes because they have two more cylinders than the little brother the Cayman. It wouldn’t be fair to the 718 to a boosted 911, way to different. SO I went with the closest I could get with both cars kind of giving a little in the engine department.
Many people in the car world know that factory turbo charged car means easy horsepower numbers in the aftermarket world. Remember the 718 we were discuss just seconds ago. I will remind you factory 350hp flat four turbo charged. Enter Suncoast Porsche Parts, they wanted to have an exercise in if a customer were to by said “stock 718 Cayman S” and show the potential of the cars platform. So, they went to work unlocking power by teaming up with Cobb tuning to open up the power and turning up the boost. Then Suncoast put a Soul performance exhaust on the car, race seats, race harnesses, GT4 style wing, suspension, OZ light weight wheels and a custom wrap livery with their branding on it and went racing. This little thing hurts a lot of feelings at the track. In fact it hurts feelings so often many of the people that it passes come and speak to Suncoast after they come off track to find out what exactly this creation is. What a wonderful problem to have right?
Suncoast Parts allowed us to drive the car for a day and let me tell you it is THE BUSINESS!! It makes all the correct sounds from turbo whistle to crackles and pops in the exhaust. What a rocket this thing is. Now, they are telling me the car now is right around 450hp on a safe tune. So it can be dialed up even more. I will tell you what it was violent in the most positive way I can describe it. If you are a person that cares little about stereo types this is your car. The 718 Cayman S with this setup will have you fighting way way above your weight class for a ton less money. With all this race car talk was it compliant at all on the street? Heck yes it was, if you don’t mind a little rawness and aggressiveness I would go as far as saying you could daily drive this setup. Full disclaimer I am bit of a knuckle head and my definition of rough ride and most are way off. So I will say if you have motorsport in your veins you wouldn’t mind the daily grind in this. I will add it had PDK so even more reason you could daily it. I would say successful exercise to Suncoast Parts on what you can do if you think outside of the box. Thank you so much to Suncoast Parts, go to them to get hooked up on all the goodies for your Porsche needs! They can even help you build a sneaky go fast 718 Cayman if you want also!! Cheers!
